Buying a used forklift in Malaysia — fuel, capacity and checks

· Roda Editorial

forkliftheavy machinerybuying guide

A forklift that is wrong for the job is a problem from day one, however good its condition. Start with what you lift, where, how high and for how many hours a day, then check the machine. This guide covers the choices and the checks for a used counterbalance forklift, and the safety duties that come with it.

This guide reflects information as of October 2026. Where a rule is mentioned, it is general information, not legal advice; check with DOSH for your workplace.

Diesel, LPG or electric

  • Diesel: suits outdoor yards, rough ground and long shifts. Its exhaust rules out enclosed warehouses and food areas.
  • LPG: cleaner than diesel, used outdoors and in ventilated indoor spaces. Ask your gas supplier about safe cylinder storage.
  • Battery electric: quiet, no exhaust, suited to smooth warehouse floors. You need time and space to charge, and the battery is a major cost on a used truck.

Capacity and load centre

  • The data plate states the rated capacity at a given load centre (the distance from the fork face to the centre of the load) and lift height.
  • A long or bulky load moves its centre outwards and reduces what the truck can safely lift. Size the forklift for your widest, heaviest load at the height you need.
  • A missing data plate, or one that does not match the mast and attachment fitted now, is a warning sign.

Mast and lift height

  • Stages: duplex, triplex and quad masts reach higher with a lower collapsed height. Measure your racking, doorways and containers.
  • Free lift: how far the forks rise before the mast extends, which matters inside containers.
  • Test: raise the mast fully, with and without a load. It should move smoothly, without jerks or chain slap.
  • Chains and rollers: check for stretched, rusty or stiff chains and worn rollers.
  • Tilt: watch for drift with a load held up.

Forks and carriage

  • Look for cracks at the heel of each fork, bent tips and forks at uneven heights. A worn heel reduces strength.
  • Check that the fork locks work and the carriage is straight.

Tyres

  • Pneumatic (air): better grip and comfort on rough or outdoor ground. Check for cuts and the pressures.
  • Solid: puncture-proof and suited to smooth floors. Check how much rubber is left; many have a wear line.

Budget for new tyres if they are near the limit.

Hours and history

  • Read the hour meter and compare it with the service records and the wear on the pedals, seat and steering wheel.
  • Ask how many shifts a day it worked. A forklift that ran two shifts in a busy warehouse has had a harder life than one used a few hours a week.
  • Ask for the repair records for the mast, transmission and hydraulic pump.

Diesel and LPG trucks

  • Start from cold and watch for hard starting, smoke and knocks.
  • Check for oil and coolant leaks, and for a milky look in the oil.
  • Drive forward and back. Direction changes should be smooth, without clunks or slipping.
  • Test the service brake, and the parking brake on a slope if you can.
  • On an LPG truck, check the cylinder bracket, hoses and regulator, and smell for leaks.

Battery electric trucks

  • Ask the age of the battery and charger, and whether the battery was replaced.
  • On a lead-acid battery, check the electrolyte level and look for corrosion, swelling and acid around the cells. Ask for a cell test.
  • On a lithium-ion battery, ask for a health report from the battery management system.
  • Charge it fully and run it under load. A tired battery drops off quickly.
  • Check that the charger matches the battery and your power supply.

Attachments

  • Side shifters, fork positioners, clamps and rotators add weight and reduce capacity. The data plate should reflect the attachment.
  • Run each attachment and look for leaks at the hoses and valves.

Safety duties

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, which has applied to all places of work since 1 June 2024, an employer must provide plant that is safe so far as is practicable, and the information, instruction, training and supervision employees need. Many employers meet this by training each operator on the type of forklift they drive, keeping training records, and checking the truck before each shift.

DOSH's 2025 application guide for lifting machinery lists forklifts among the material handling equipment that the Occupational Safety and Health (Plant Requiring Certificate of Fitness) Regulations 2024 do not apply to, and says it classifies machinery by features and function, not name. For other lifting work with attachments, or to confirm the operator training your site needs, check with DOSH. If the forklift will use public roads, ask JPJ.

Before you pay

  1. Get the data plate details, serial number and hour reading in writing.
  2. Ask for proof of ownership, and a release letter if it was under hire purchase or a lease.
  3. Test it with a load like yours.
  4. Pay the owner named on the documents, not a third party.
